Practical Issues for Practicing Surgical and Cytopathologists

This advanced course is designed to provide updated pragmatic, problem-solving knowledge for practicing surgical and cytopathologists who also wish to remain current with the changing trends in cytodiagnosis and laboratory management. It addresses the resolution of diagnostic pitfalls relative to each of the major organ systems studied by cytopathology/FNA. A syllabus containing the PowerPoint lecture material will be distributed at the course. Following the course, these PowerPoint lectures as well as handouts and ancillary materials will be available online for participants. Above all, this course is intended to provide a pleasant, informal atmosphere for learning as well as opportunities for 1:1 interaction with the outstanding faculty.

The 2014 Diagnostic Cytopathology Course provides 18.25 CME/13 SAMs credits. Additional CME and SAMs credits may be obtained by registering for and attending additional sessions which include a 1 hour didactic FNA lecture and 2 hour hands-on practicum. The FNA lecture offers a 1 hour CME credit and a 1 hour SAMs credit.  The ultrasound session offers 2 hours of CME credit and NO SAMs credit. Please note that there is a separate registration fee for each of these sessions. Participants have the option to register for the lecture portion only or the lecture and practicum together. The lecture and practicum together are limited to the first 35 registrants. Attending all of the sessions within the course enables attendees to earn up to 21.25 CME credits and 14 SAMs credits.

After attending the Diagnostic Cytopathology Course participants should be better able to:

  • Triage cytologic specimens for preliminary and final interpretations for a variety of body sites with an understanding of cytologic limitations and managerial impact.
  • Utilize appropriate nomenclature for thyroid, pancreas, gynecologic, lung, and urine cytology.
  • Understand advantages and pitfalls in commonly used and new molecular tests and immunohistochemical stains utilizing cytologic specimens.
  • Ascertain the current guidelines and consensus for Pap tests, HPV testing and management.
