Jennifer Hunt, M.D., M.Ed. Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA and Henry D. Tazelaar, M.D. Mayo Clinic in Arizona and The College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, AZ

Here is a quiz to determine if this course is right for you:

"When I see a microphone and a podium, I …" A) Need to check into the ER to rule-out a myocardial infarction; B) Am entirely neutral, unemotional, ambivalent; C) Feel at the top of my game, energized, and ready to take on the world.

Whether you absolutely dread standing up in front of a group or you love an audience (or you are anywhere in between), you will benefit from this course. We will provide you with strategies for common problem areas in public speaking and give you the tips and techniques for delivering the most impact from your presentations. This course will include didactic sessions and small group exercises, with a highly interactive format. You will learn strategies to manage difficult areas, such as designing visual aids, capturing and maintaining your audience's attention, transitioning between topics seamlessly, and managing speech anxiety. If you present in public, whether to a group of 5 or to a group of 500, you can learn the skills and techniques of communicating for impact.

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to: 1) Prepare presentations that will appeal to the audience. 2) Capture and maintain your audience's attention. 3) Practice strategies to manage speech anxiety and nervousness. 4) Incorporate comfortable and natural gestures into presentations.

All participants will be provided with a syllabus containing the PowerPoint slides at the time of the meeting. After the meeting, participants will receive web access to the PowerPoint presentation given at the Annual Meeting.
