The USCAP-Companion meeting committee for the AAOP (Hans Grossniklaus MD, Douglas Cameron MD, and Paty Chevez Barrios, MD) discussed the reviews from the 2011 meeting, reviewed topics that were presented in prior years and speakers that were involved in the programs. After a thorough review, we concluded that our audience would be interested in Systematic Diseases Affecting the Eye. Dr. Nora V. Laver was selected as Program Chair, and together with the committee chose members of our organization with expertise in these topics and invited them to be speakers.

The goals and objectives for this meeting are to review a variety of systematic pathologies that affect the eye. The meeting will illustrate the ocular findings through practical clinoco-pathological cases, addressing issues that relate to general surgical pathology practice. The phakomatoses, their clinical presentation and histopathological features will be discussed, including neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and ataxia-telangiectasia. Discussions will also include examples of metastatic malignancies affecting the eye. An update on systemic inflammatory diseases and the often challenging diagnosis of orbital inflammatory pseudotumor and its different diagnosis will be addressed along with an overview of the most common systemic infections affecting the eye.
