This course is intended to provide general and surgical pathologists, and pathologists-in-training with a review of a wide spectrum of arterial and venous diseases. Following this course participants should be familiar with the quantitative assessments of arterial structure, the differential diagnosis and the limits of histologic diagnosis of arteritis, and have knowledge of what modifications to make in the sampling of resected arterial segments in different disease processes. A wide range of non-atherosclerotic lesions will be demonstrated and the identification of infectious agents in atherosclerosis will be discussed. Participants will become familiar with vascular diseases induced by enzyme defects and various errors of metabolism as well as vascular pathology induced by interventional cardiology. The relationship between vascular histologic appearance and structural strength will be explored. A number of unusual arterial and venous lesions will also be demonstrated. A case method of presentation will be used to introduce each topic. Case histories and a limited number of loan sets of glass slides will be available for advance mailing. A detailed syllabus and CD-ROM will be distributed at the time of the course. All registrants will be mailed a set of transparencies after the meeting.
