45. Placental Pathology

This course is designed to familiarize the surgical pathologist and pathology resident with the most frequently encountered disorders of the placenta. The course begins with an approach to general placental examination and then covers specific disorders including, 1) acute placental infections (chorioamnionitis), 2) chronic placental infections and chronic villitis, 3) maternal vascular disorders, 4) placental vascular disorders, 5) amnion nodosum, 6) infarcts and thrombi, 7) hydrops placentalis, 8) twin transfusion syndrome, 9) complete hydatidiform mole, and 10) meconium and medico-legal implications. Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to recognize the placental pathologic findings in a wide variety of maternal and fetal disorders. In addition, the pathologist will be able to actively participate in discussions pertaining to the impact of placental pathology on perinatal outcome. Case histories and a limited number of loan sets of glass slides will be available for advance mailing. All registrants will be mailed a set of transparencies after the meeting.
