The main objective of this course is to critically review the role of histopathology in the diagnosis and management of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The course is intended to familiarize practicing pathologists and trainees with established criteria and guidelines, as well as controversial issues and their impact on clinical practice. Specific course objectives include detailed review of: 1) histopathologic diagnostic criteria for IBD, 2) criteria for differentiating IBD subtypes in fulminant and non-fulminant settings, 3) differential diagnostic considerations, 4) diagnostic criteria and clinical importance of hyperplastic, dysplastic and adenomatous lesions in IBD, and 5) the risk of lymphoma in IBD and the impact of immunosuppressive therapy on this risk.
