The improvement in the quality of the cytologic preparation through the use of ThinPrep (TP) methodology has made this new technique the procedure of choice at many institutions. However, in order to obtain the highest accuracy and least diagnostic errors with TP, the pathologist should be aware of the several artifacts introduced by the technique. This course will start by a short overview of the TP methodology and the several steps involved. The artifacts introduced to the most commonly encountered cytologic specimens prepared by TP will be illustrated and the new subtle diagnostic features will be discussed. Diagnostic problems and pitfalls related to gynecologic and non-gynecologic body sites will be elaborated on, coupled by appropriate examples. This course will emphasize how to issue accurate interpretation and avoid false diagnoses on TP. Application of ancillary techniques on TP will be referred to when relevant. At the end, a short summary will be presented in the form of a self-assessment quiz highlighting look-alike cases and their mimicking and distinguishing features.

This course should be suitable for general pathologist and pathology residents. While prior experience with TP is not necessary, familiarity with cytologic interpretation would be helpful.
