26. Lung Biopsy Interpretation

Anna-Luise A. Katzenstein, M.D., Upstate Medical University and Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, New York and Jeffrey L. Myers, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota

This is a practically oriented course that concentrates on non-neoplastic lung diseases and is designed for general surgical pathologists and pathologists in training. Ten cases will be presented that provide a broad overview of diseases likely to be encountered on biopsy specimens, including examples of interstitial lung diseases, acute lung injury, infections, vasculitis, and various infiltrative lung diseases. The discussions will emphasize specific diagnostic points and features important in the differential diagnosis. Guidelines for the handling and interpretation of lung biopsy specimens, including tips for meaningful clinical interactions, will also be covered. A limited number of loan sets of glass slides will be available for advance mailing and will be accompanied by a detailed clinical history that includes description of the radiographic findings and summary of pulmonary function test results where pertinent. All registrants will receive a set of transparencies after the meeting. A comprehensive syllabus will be distributed that summarizes important diagnostic features, reviews the differential diagnosis, and provides a list of current and classic references for each disease.
