This course will cover the features of the major types of occupational lung diseases. Topics to be covered include: Diseases caused by fume inhalation (necrotizing bronchitis/bronchiolitis, ARDS, and bronchiolitis obliterans); diseases caused by exposure to coal dust including simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis and complicated coal workers' pneumoconiosis; diseases caused by exposure to crystalline silica including simple silicosis, complicated silicosis and silicoproteinosis; diseases caused by asbestos including asbestosis, benign pleural disease, carcinoma of the lung, and malignant mesothelioma; and diseases caused by sensitizing agents including berylliosis, hard metal disease, and hypersensitivity pneumonia. Approximately 1/3 of the course will be devoted to the epidemiology and especially the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum, the separation of benign and malignant mesothelial proliferations, and the separation of mesothelioma from other pleural tumors.
Case histories and a limited number of loan sets of glass slides will be available for advance mailing. All registrants will be mailed a set of representative transparencies after the meeting. A comprehensive syllabus will be distributed at the time of the course. The course is directed to both residents and practicing pathologists. (Last Scheduled Presentation)
