This is a practically oriented course that focuses on the most common subset of ovarian tumors, the surface epithelial-stromal tumors. This course is designed for general surgical pathologists and pathologists-in-training. Emphasis will be placed on recent developments in the surgical pathology of ovarian surface epithelial-stromal neoplasms and problems in differential diagnosis.

The course will be constructed as a series of case presentations of varying lengths that will provide a comprehensive overview of surface epithelial-stromal neoplasms in the borderline and malignant categories, encompassing serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, transitional cell and undifferentiated tumors. The case presentations will cover histopathological features, differential diagnosis, adjuvant diagnostic techniques, patient management, and recent advances in the understanding of pathogenesis.

A limited number of loan sets of glass slides will be available for advance mailing. After the meeting, all participants will receive a CD with representative histological images. A comprehensive syllabus reviewing diagnostic features and differential diagnosis, and providing an extensive reference list will be distributed at the course.

After completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1) accurately diagnose surface epithelial-stromal neoplasms of the ovary, 2) be familiar with the prognostic and treatment implications of their diagnoses, 3) have insight into recent advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of these tumors.
