As patients with liver or kidney transplants are currently evaluated in both tertiary care medical centers where the procedures are performed as well as in community hospitals, pathologists in all settings may be asked to interpret these allograft tissue specimens. This course is designed to review basic aspects of the pathology and immunopathology of rejection of these organs and handling of tissue for appropriate interpretation. Through a series of individual case presentations, pathological aspects of renal and hepatic transplant hyperacute, acute, and chronic rejection, drug toxicity and recurrent diseases will be discussed. In addition, issues of infections including post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder and considerations of the various classification systems concerning pathologies of rejection will be covered. An approach toward diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses, with clinical correlations in all instances, will be stressed.
