This course is designed for general anatomic pathologists and residents who wish to learn the pathologic basis of congenital and acquired pediatric lung diseases. Clinical importance of the diseases will be discussed in the context of differential diagnosis. The objective of the course is to provide pathologists with an understanding of both the common pulmonary disorders seen in children along with the less common but more controversial areas of pediatric pulmonary disease. Specific topics to be discussed include: 1) Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation) and its relationship to pleuropulmonary blastoma, 2) Congenital pulmonary lymphagiectasia, 3) Pulmonary sequestration - extralobar (congenital) and intralobar (acquired), 4) Pulmonary hypoplasia - incidence and methods of diagnosis, 5) Arrested pulmonary development in post surfactant “bronchopulmonary dysplasia”, 6) Interstitial pulmonary emphysema, acute and persistent, 7) Viral pneumonias, 8) Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, 9) Congenital surfactant deficiency and alveolar proteinosis, 10) Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis, 11) Infantile lobar emphysema, overdistension versus hyperplastic lung and 12) Alveolar capillary dysplasia.
