Surgical gastrointestinal diseases in the pediatric age group often present unique diagnostic challenges. Some disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease, can present in a much wider age group, including the adult population. These disorders are diverse, and may have different presentations in childhood than in adulthood, often affecting growth and development and presenting with failure to thrive. Recent research has increased our understanding of the pathobiology of many of these diseases and has influenced clinical diagnosis and treatment of these patients, thus warranting updates on these topics. Selection of topics is also based, in part, on requests by participants at prior meetings of both societies. This symposium is intended to meet the needs of pediatric pathologists, adult pathologists, fellows and residents who handle and diagnose such pediatric and adult surgical pathology specimens.
