The status of regional lymph nodes in head and neck cancer patients is the single most important prognostic feature. It is essential that pathologists know the anatomy of the head and neck, what histologic variables (such as extracapsular spread) impact on prognosis, and how to construct a meaningful surgical pathology report on neck dissections. The Society has not previously addressed this topic and thus it was chosen for this year.
