This course is designed to offer practicing pathologists, pathologists-in-training and academic pathologists with an interest in lung disease, an integrated practical approach to the histologic interpretation and molecular analysis of the diagnostically challenging non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of the lung and their differential diagnostic mimics. This course will use a case oriented approach to address a variety of diagnostic problems in pulmonary pathology that, based on our consultation practice experience, seem to be a continual source of difficulty for pathologists. The course will be constructed as a series of case presentations of varying length that will provide a practical surgical pathology update together with recent developments in understanding of molecular pathogenesis of different pulmonary lesions including non-small cell carcinoma with satellite tumor nodules, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma and its precursor lesions, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, Langerhans cell histiocytosis and granulomatous processes. The application and impact of molecular studies in the management, therapy and prognosis of these lesions will be discussed. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to integrate molecular techniques with traditional histology in the diagnosis of difficult cases in pulmonary pathology.
