The past decade has seen enormous changes in our understanding of the viral mechanisms that contribute to tumorigenesis. It will be useful for practicing pathologists to update their fund of knowledge regarding the role of Human Papillomavirus and Epstein Barr virus as they pertain to the pathogenesis of various tumors of the head and neck. The Society has not previously addressed this topic and thus it was chosen for this year.
