51. Neuroendocrine Tumors Including Dermatologic Manifestations

Ricardo V. Lloyd, M.D., Ph.D. and Lori A. Erickson, M.D., Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN

The course will present a practical approach for pathologists, fellows, and residents for the diagnosis of endocrine tumors with emphasis on the diagnostic criteria and associated manifestations. Concepts in endocrine pathology will be discussed to facilitate the diagnosis and understanding of endocrine tumors including their dermatologic manifestations. This course will include a series of case-based presentations with time for questions and audience interaction. Glass slides will be available for mailing to pre-registrants before the course, a syllabus will be distributed at the meeting, and participants will receive a CD-ROM with presentations after the course. Differential diagnosis will be generated for each lesion and diagnostic criteria will be emphasized. Immunohistochemical studies useful in the differential diagnoses will be presented. Common familial endocrine disorders and syndromes will be reviewed including cutaneous manifestations. New concepts in molecular mechanisms involved in these conditions will be discussed.

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to: 1) generate differential diagnoses and list criteria used to diagnose specific endocrine lesions, 2) have a working knowledge of the cutaneous manifestations of endocrine lesions, 3) understand the immunohistochemical markers useful in the diagnosis of common endocrine lesions and the molecular basis for these conditions.
