Case 2 - Update on American Board of Pathology Certification

2. Pre-Board

READ THE BOOKLET OF INFORMATION
  • Get a medical license

  • Discuss the time-line of your training with your Program Director.

  • Complete the application
    • READ HELPFUL HINTS AND INSTRUCTIONS

    • Months vs rotations

    • Autopsies – 50; document age, sex, primary diagnosis, date performed

    • Provide additional numbers of procedures as requested – be as accurate as possible

    • Advanced Credit – none for residents beginning on or after 7/1/03

    • Research – up to six months as part of the training program

    • Adverse actions – make sure you and your Program Director are using the same definition

  • Meet the deadlines
    • Spring exam – January 15

    • Subspecialty exam – May 1

    • Fall exam – May 1 (mid-August for repeaters from June)

    • Single certification – April 1, October 1

  • Review your application with your program director

  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BS THE ABP STAFF

  • Once you have been assigned a qualification period, know what that means and when it expires

  • READ THE BOOKLET OF INFORMATION

  • Date assignment
    • Assigned in early March

    • Date cannot be changed within an examination period. Options are
      • Take the date assigned or

      • Within 4 weeks from date of assignment letter, let us know that you want to transfer to a later exam
        • First transfer - no charge

        • Subsequent transfers - $500

  • Study
    • Review Courses – Yes or No

  • Take the practice exam

3. Board
  • READ ALL OF YOUR ADMISSION MATERIALS
    • Arrive at correct date and time

    • Bring the appropriate material to the Exam Center

    • Jacket, Pen or pencil, Eyeglasses

    • All other items must be left in the storage area outside the Exam Center

    • Nikon microscopes are provided; you may bring your own if you wish

  • LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Read the questions carefully. Look for words such as "except" "least" "not"

  • If you have a problem with your computer, do not panic. Your answers are not lost.

4. Post-Board
  • Results are usually mailed in 4-6 weeks after the last exams are given.

  • READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION IN YOUR ENVELOPE

  • If you are required to retake all or part of the exam, the instructions for what you need to do are included with your letter

  • The deadline for registration for candidates who are not successful in the spring exam and want to re-take the exam in the fall is August 15 or two weeks after the pass/fail letters are mailed whichever is later

  • Do not wait until you find out whether or not you have passed the AP/CP boards to start studying for a subspecialty board that you have applied to take in September

  • Get a medical license. Your results will not be released until we have this information.

  • Make sure that if we have requested other additional information in order to release your results that we get it. This is your responsibility – not ours.

5. Post-Board - MOC
  • All certificates issues by ABP are time-limited

  • Diplomates may choose to maintain either or both primary certificates plus all subspecialty certificates or may maintain certification in subspecialty only

  • Parts of MOC
    • Professional Standing

    • Life-long Learning and Self-Assessment

    • Cognitive Expertise

    • Evaluation of Performance in Practice

  • Professional Standing
    • Medical licensure

    • Documentation of medical staff membership and scope of health care organization privileges


  • Life-long Learning and Self-Assessment
    • Average of 35 Category 1 CME credits per year for each 2-year period in MOC cycle

    • 10 of the 35 credits must be obtain from completion of self-assessment modules (SAMs)

    • Maintain electronic record with ABP – updated at least every 2 years

  • Cognitive Expertise
    • Mandatory, closed-book exam

    • Must be taken no later than 10 years after initial or most recent certification; may be taken as early as the eighth year in a 10 year cycle

    • Modular exam
      • Fundamental knowledge

      • Current practice-related knowledge

      • Practice environment

  • Evaluation of Performance in Practice
    • Peer attestations as to interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, ethics, and effectiveness in systems-based practice.

    • Laboratory accreditation

    • Laboratory participation in inter-laboratory improvement and quality assurance programs

    • Individual participation in at least one laboratory improvement and quality assurance activity per year

  • Unsatisfactory performance

  • Must submit plan for improvement

  • Must meet criteria by December 31 of the year in which certificate expires
