The NASHNP solicited topics of interest from select officers/members of the NASHNP. Several potential topics were discussed and topics selected were chosen in agreement with the chair of the scientific program committee. Improving diagnoses of head and neck cancers, updates on emerging critical issues, as well as reporting of cancers were of high interest to NASHNP membership as well as the larger pathology community as well. The NASHNP membership is focused on the dissemination of best practices to reduce interpretation errors and to improve quality and reporting of diagnoses.

Our needs assessment process was based on the evaluation of the current literature and the 2007 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Institute report that documented the important topics for evaluation and study in the field of laboratory medicine.

The purpose and objectives of the program are as follows: 1) Provide examples of “real-practice” errors in diagnoses; 2) Highlight root cause of these errors; 3) Describe the role of the pathologists in eliminating or reducing the frequency of these errors; 4) Discuss known “best-practices” and means of implementation; and 4) Provide a framework for process change and technology in addressing improvement.

The NASHNP is very excited about the 2009 program, one that we are confident is in keeping with the quality expected of Companion Societies, and one that we feel will appeal to a broad spectrum of pathologists in all practice settings. We also will evaluate effectiveness by monitoring attendance and tracking the scope and breadth of questions and the evaluations of each speaker.
