This is a practically oriented course that will use a case-based format to highlight the most common types of non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular specimens received by the surgical pathologist and the most common diagnoses associated with them. This course is designed for cardiovascular, as well as general surgical pathologists and pathologists-in-training, including cardiovascular pathology fellows.

Through a series of nine cases, the faculty will discuss diseases of the ascending aorta, native valvular disease, inflammatory small vessel disease, iatrogenic heart disease, and myocardial disease. The classification of pulmonary vascular disease and the new International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Working Formulation for Cardiac Rejection will be presented. Important associations and differential diagnoses will be discussed as appropriate.

Pre-registrants will receive a website address where they can view the images and case histories prior to the meeting. Participants will also receive a handout which will include a printed copy of the Powerpoint presentations at the course. Electronic copies of templates used at our institution for the sign out of the most common types of specimens will be mailed to participants after the course.

At the completion of the course, the participants will be able to: 1) accurately diagnose the most common types of non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, 2) precisely and succinctly describe these diseases with the use of ready-to-use templates, and 3) discuss important potential associations.
