The histological diagnosis of oral soft and hard tissue tumors and diseases can be problematic and challenging, particularly for the general pathologist. Even for the general pathologist experienced in head and neck pathology, certain peculiarities and nuances of oral lesions may present diagnostic problems especially with regard to terminology. Furthermore, a full appreciation of the case’s clinical correlations and management following diagnosis may not be part of the pathologist’s repertoire, especially if lacking formal dental training. The major objectives of this course is to present in a classic case-study approach a series of eight interesting and diagnostically challenging soft and hard tissue oral and maxillofacial pathology cases with particular emphasis on the histologic differential diagnosis for each case. At the conclusion of the course, the attendee will be familiar with the distinguishing histopathologic features of each case and will know the most current information about each case’s etiology, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms and management. This course is intended primarily for practicing general pathologists, fellows, and residents.

The background, clinical details, macroscopic/microscopic findings, and radiographic appearance/interpretation (where applicable) of each case will be presented to highlight a specific diagnostic pitfall and/or dilemma. Treatment, prognosis, and follow-up information (when available) will also be presented and a short question and answer period will follow each case presentation. Pre-registrants will receive a website address where they can view each case’s clinical history and a series of photomicrographs. A syllabus containing a synopsis of the case information to be presented at the course as well as comprehensive current references will be distributed at the course. After the course each registrant will receive a DVD with BLISS virtual microscopy slides of each case as well as a pdf file of each cases’ presentation including all clinical, radiographic (when applicable) and microscopic images.
