  • A world-renowned renal pathologist. Studied under Dr. Conrad Pirani at Columbia University. Has published over 150 articles in the field, as well as authored or co-authored over a dozen chapters in renal pathology in some of the major textbooks of pathology. Co-editor/author of six textbooks including Heptinstall's Pathology of the Kidney (three editions), the Atlas of Renal Pathology, The AFIP/ARP fascicle Non-Neoplastic Kidney Diseases, and Silva's Diagnostic Renal Pathology.

  • Research endeavors included the clinicopathologic correlations of a large number of renal diseases, the immunohistochemical/lectin dissection of the human nephron in health and disease, and the rigid demonstration of mRNA at the ultrastructural level.

  • Associate Director of The Southwest Pediatric Nephrology Study Group and Chair, Pathology Section from 1980-1998 (a 15 medical center, 8 state-based cooperative study group dedicated to the study of pediatric renal disease).

  • Charter member/Secretary of the Renal Pathology Club. Third president of the Renal Pathology Society. Received the Jacob Churg Award in 2002.

  • Editorial board member of over ten pathology and nephrology journals; charter member of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Modern Pathology.

  • Organized/co-directed over 50 postgraduate courses including three ongoing courses that he helped organize: Renal Biopsy in Medical Diagnosis (Columbia P&S); Current Issues in Surgical Pathology (UT Southwestern Medical School); and the USCAP's Diagnostic Pathology.

  • A well-respected and tireless teacher. Recipient of over 20 teaching awards from students at every institution with which he was affiliated. Received the Regents' Award for Superior Teaching from the Oklahoma University Board of Regents (1998). In 1999 he received the prestigious Edgar Young Lifetime Achievement Award for his long-term dedication to medical education from Oklahoma University.

  • The "Fred Silva Award" is given each year at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine to the graduating senior medical student who shows "the greatest leadership qualities and is involved in public education".

  • A visiting Professor/Invited Speaker world-wide. Has given over 25 endowed lectureships. Lectures on: The Future of Pathology and Medicine; Genetics and Ethics; Virtual Journal Club; House Staff Endeavors; and Renal Medicine.

  • Since taking the helm at the USCAP in 1999, the Academy has realized unparalleled growth in membership, recruitment of residents and fellows, scientific abstracts submissions, and attendance at the Annual Meetings.

  • Instrumental in initiating and developing, along with David Hardwick, JoAnn Johnson and the faculty of the USCAP, the USCAP Knowledge Hub/Pathology Portal: The largest eBook in Anatomic Pathology/Diagnostic Molecular pathology in the world: over 1900 educational modules. The leader in electronic pathology education reaching over 24,000 individual pathologists in 168 countries; three to ten million "hits" per month. Free to all!

  • Involved in many altruistic endeavors to help pathologists in under served countries including the Friends of Africa-USCAP Initiatives, with Dr. Adekunle Adesina, supporting over 20 Sub-Saharan African nations; International Bursaries at IAP International Congresses (to support travel by under served pathologists throughout the world); and wide-spread distribution of free educational materials.

  • Recipient of The International Academy of Pathology's Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to international pathology education and research (2006). Recipient of both the ASCP and USCAP President's Award (2010-2011).

  • North American Vice President to the International Academy of Pathology.

  • His avocation is studying the relationships between science and religion and lecturing to a wide variety of public, religious and professional groups on this topic as well as on cosmology, evolution, genetics and medicine, ethics, and pathology.

  • Well-known for his endless energy, good sense of humor, and love of bourbon ("with two large glasses, the very largest glasses you have, of diet coke").
