Introduction
Clinical staging and adequate treatment require specific diagnoses. This infrastructure is lacking in countries with high incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other emerging infectious diseases. It is imperative that use of pathology and other diagnostic services is increased. Systematic anatomic and clinical pathology studies in diverse populations and geographic areas can provide valuable information for the development of staging and treatment algorithms and to monitor effects and toxicity of antiretroviral therapy.

The objectives of this session are:

  1. to provide an overview of the approach to diagnosis of infectious diseases using basic tools available in most hospitals worldwide

  2. to present available regional reference centers/resources and to establish partnerships for diagnosis and research

  3. to demonstrate the importance of pathology diagnosis in disease surveillance in given populations
