SC03- Uses and Limitations of Immunohistochemistry and other Adjunctive Studies in Breast Pathology

2015 Annual Meeting

Room CC 304, March 25 2015, 8:00am to 12:00pm

Stuart Schnitt, Laura Collins

Educational Objective

NEW COURSE Immunostains and other adjunctive studies are commonly used in the evaluation of breast lesions to supplement routine H and E-stained sections. The goal of this course is to describe and discuss the uses and limitations of these ancillary techniques in the daily practice of breast pathology. Specific topics to be discussed include:

  1. uses and limitations of myoepithelial cell markers to distinguish benign and in situ from invasive breast lesions;
  2. the role of immunohistochemistry in the evaluation of papillary, spindle cell, and intraductal proliferative lesions of the breast;
  3. uses and limitations of immunohistochemistry in determining breast vs. non-breast origin of metastatic lesions;
  4. uses and limitations of immunohistochemistry in distinguishing in situ and invasive lobular from ductal lesions;
  5. uses and limitations of molecular prognostic signatures;
  6. uses and limitations of genomic analysis in the evaluation of breast cancers.

The material presented will be of practical relevance to general surgical pathologists, pathologists with particular interest in breast pathology, and pathology trainees. A case-based format will be utilized and cases will serve as springboards for discussion. Attendees will be provided with case histories and images or virtual slides prior to the course. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. provide guidelines for the uses of immunohistochemistry to solve several recurring diagnostic problems in breast pathology
  2. understand the limitations and pitfalls in the use of immunohistochemistry to solve diagnostic problems in breast pathology
  3. discuss the uses and limitations of newer, molecular adjunctive tests which are being used increasingly to guide patient treatment
