Educational Objective

NEW COURSE This is a practically oriented course that focuses on the ocular pathology competency needs for practicing neuropathologists, neuropathology fellows in training, residents and general pathologists. This course is designed to serve as an up-to-date review of the most common ocular pathology specimens encountered in practice. Basic ocular pathology tissue dissection techniques, common histology stains used and a review of the normal ocular structures will be discussed. Through a serious of case presentations, the most common conjunctival, corneal, intraocular and orbital pathologies including common infections, benign and malignant lesions will be discussed. The discussions will cover histopathological findings, differential diagnosis, adjuvant diagnostic technique, patient management and clinico-pathological correlations. Virtual slides and still images, along with case histories will be posed on the USCAP website for review by pre-registrants prior to the meeting. A syllabus reviewing diagnostic features and differential diagnosis along with a selected reference lists will be made available prior to the meeting. All course registrants will also receive web access to the POWERPoint presentations presented at the USCAP meeting. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. review the most salient normal ocular histological features of the cornea, conjunctiva, orbit and intraocular structures,
  2. recall the most important gross dissection techniques used in ocular pathology,
  3. compare and contrast the diagnostic features of the most common conjunctival, corneal, orbital and intraocular pathologies encountered in practice and
  4. review the appropriate diagnostic wording currently utilized in surgical pathology reports to Ophthalmology clinicians.
