SC55- A Practical Approach to Infectious Disease Pathology

2015 Annual Meeting

Room CC 203, March 26 2015, 8:00am to 11:30am

Bobbi Pritt, Laura Lamps

Educational Objective

Accurate and timely diagnosis of infectious entities in tissue and cytologic preparations requires recognition of characteristic morphologic features, formulation of an appropriate differential diagnosis, and interpretation of ancillary stains and studies. This course will provide a practical approach to diagnosis of common infectious entities encountered in routine clinical practice, with an emphasis on tools and algorithms for identification and tips for overcoming diagnostic pitfalls. The course will be constructed as a series of interactive case presentations that will allow for discussion of common infectious entities in tissue, including yeasts, molds, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Each case presentation will include a discussion of clinical correlates, implications for therapy, reporting issues and useful ancillary microbiology and molecular tests. Materials for each case, including a clinical history, virtual slides and still images will be posted on the USCAP website for review prior to
