Encapsulated Follicular Cell-Derived Tumors of the Thyroid Gland, a Practical Update.

Educational Objective

The Endocrine Pathology Society members determined the title, contents and speakers of this companion meeting. The target audience includes practicing pathologists, academic pathologists, pathology residents and fellows who have interests in the pathology of endocrine neoplasms. This topic was chosen in order to present to the practicing pathologist an updated overview of the encapsulated follicular cell-derived tumors of the thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are highly prevalent in the general population, are often resected and represent for surgical pathologists a common type of specimen. The distinction between encapsulated nodules that are benign and those that have a malignant potential can be very challenging. The ultrasound features, cytology findings, molecular alterations and histopathologic criteria that distinguish benign from malignant encapsulated thyroid nodules are reviewed with an emphasis on the practical pre-and postoperative diagnostic aspects. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Have a better grasp on the power and the limits of the ultrasound examination in the pre-operative assessment of thyroid nodules;
  2. Update their knowledge of the criteria currently used for the preoperative cytologic diagnosis of fine needle aspiration samples;
  3. Appreciate the relevance of molecular alterations in the development of thyroid lesions and their clinical applications;
  4. Understand the diagnostic criteria, prognostic and therapeutic implications as well as the controversies surrounding the current histologic classification of encapsulated follicular cell-derived neoplasms.
