Small Biopsy Specimens of Head and Neck with Emphasis on Cell Cytology and the Role of Special Studies.

Educational Objective

The PSC solicited topics of interest from their membership at the annual business meetings. Several potential topics were discussed at the Executive Board meeting and the topic for the 2015 session was chosen in agreement with the chairs of the scientific program committees. New approaches to pathologist performance and interpretation of FNA and small tissue biopsies of head and neck lesions including salivary gland, sinonasal, intraoral and para-pharyngeal lesions is of high interest to the PSC membership and is currently cited as an important topic in cytopathology. Our needs assessment process was based on the evaluation of the current literature and the feedback by PSC members. Evaluations through the USCAP are required in order to obtain CME credit. We also will evaluate effectiveness by monitoring attendance and tracking the scope and breadth of questions and the evaluations of each speaker. Upon completion of this education activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review diagnostic features of salivary gland lesions on FNA and small biopsies including diagnostic pitfalls and the utility of ancillary studies including molecular techniques.
  2. Discuss the utility of small biopsies in the diagnosis of sinonasal lesions with emphasis on cell cytology including the use of ancillary techniques.
  3. Discuss the role of small tissue biopsies of head and neck squamous lesions with emphasis on difficult variants of squamous cell carcinoma, squamoproliferative processes, and benign and malignant squamous mimics.
  4. Review the diagnostic methods of challenging intra-oral and parapharyngeal lesions with FNA and small tissue biopsy including the usage of ancillary techniques.

Session Credits: CME = 3 / SAMs = N/A
