The Most Challenging Cases That I Encounter in My Practice: My Approach to Differential Diagnosis

Educational Objective

Surgical pathology continues to evolve as diagnostic criteria are refined, 'new' entities are described, and increasingly specific immunohistochemical markers and genetic alterations are identified. These new tools improve the ability of surgical pathologist to arrive at specific diagnoses for optimal patient care. However, many areas in surgical pathology remain difficult. This symposium will focus on cases that are particularly challenging to expert subspecialty surgical pathologists and provide insights into approaching the differential diagnosis of these difficult areas. The topic was chosen by the President, the Officers, the Committee members and the Co-Chairs of the Program Committee of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society. This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of practicing pathologists and pathologists in training. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Approach the differential diagnosis of challenging areas in surgical pathology.
  2. Identify histologic clues that aid in differential diagnosis.
  3. Understand how to apply new diagnostic immunohistochemical markers and molecular genetic findings to select differential diagnoses in surgical pathology
