Infectious Diseases and the Gastrointestinal Tract

Educational Objective

Gastrointestinal infections are common in the gastrointestinal tract and a systematic approach to their diagnosis is required to adequately address the types of infectious agents present. In addition, several infectious diseases mimic other types of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases in the gastrointestinal tract. The Binford-Dammin Infectious Disease Society Education Committee and senior members of the Society, selected the topic for presentation of this topic at the 2015 USCAP Companion Meeting. This topic was selected because infectious diseases are common in the gastrointestinal tract and the differential diagnoses often overlap with other inflammatory as well as neoplastic disease processes in this site. This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pathologists and pathologists in training whose practices involving gastrointestinal pathology. Upon Completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe infectious disease considerations as related to chronic idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease
  2. Describe the differential diagnostic considerations of infectious diseases mimicking ischemic colitis
  3. Describe the systematic approach to the histologic evaluation gastrointestinal infections
  4. Describe infectious causes of gastritis
  5. Describe the differential diagnosis of small bowel and esophageal infections
