The Immunohistochemical Markers and Ancillary Tests your Lab Needs Now: Learn from the Experts.

Educational Objective

Numerous new immunohistochemical stains and ancillary tests have emerged in the practice of anatomic surgical pathology in recent years given a wealth of both diagnostic and prognostic data in the peer-reviewed literature. Thus, a need exists in both general academic practice and private practice environments alike for consistent knowledge updates on such modalities. We fulfill this need using published experts in their respective fields in an organ-based approach to innovative and cost-effective approaches to selecting the right tests for your laboratory’s needs. The Curriculum Committee of the College of American Pathologists considers the list of past offerings, the current and evolving state of anatomic pathology, needs of the USCAP audience, and expert opinion in selecting the topic for the 2015 CAP Companion Society education symposium. The education is targeted at private practice and academic pathologists and residents who practice in a general (non-subspecialized) practice environment. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Effectively select immunohistochemical stains that aid in the identification and differentiation of tumor types across various organ systems
  2. Determine which immunostains provide the most sensitive and specific diagnostic information in multiple case-based settings
  3. Undertake a cost-effective, evidence-based workup for metastatic tumors of unknown primary site
  4. Generate a differential diagnosis for a metastatic tumor based on immunohistochemical results and supportive data
