Practical Issues and Diagnostic Challenges in Liver Pathology

The topics were chosen in order to update the audience of issues pertinent to both the practicing general pathologist and liver pathology subspecialists alike. These will cover new therapeutic interventions for hepatitis and liver cancer and what this means to the pathologist, differential diagnosis of fatty liver diseases, vascular diseases and portal hypertension, understanding the basics of biomedical informatics and its applicability in general practice, diagnosis of mixed hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma and to discuss the current methods available to assist in reaching a diagnosis in challenging liver pathology cases. The president of the society determines the topics for presentation. Target audience include: general pathologists, pathologists in-training, and specialists in liver and GI pathology. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. To update the audience on the new therapies for hepatitis and liver cancer and the implications to the pathologist.
  2. To discuss the less common diseases that can cause nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases.
  3. The review the pathophysiology of vascular diseases and the etiology of noncirrhotic portal hypertension.
  4. To update the audience in identifying mixed primary liver cancer.
  5. To discuss biomedical informatics and update the audience as to the different ancillary studies that are useful in liver pathology.
