Evaluation of Breast Margins: Pathology, Surgical and Radiation Oncology Views Business Meeting

Educational Objective

The topics for the symposium were determined by the Executive Committee members of International Society of Breast Pathology after soliciting input from membership. Our needs assessment process was based on the evaluation of the current literature and feedback provided by audience participating in our prior companion symposiums. The purpose of the companion meeting is to inform the audience regarding the most recent changes in the practice of breast pathology. The current program will cover assessment of breast margins by multidisciplinary team members including pathology, surgical and radiation oncology. The clinical application of current consensus statement will be discussed by case examples. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review current standards and emerging data regarding evaluation of margins of breast resections and definitions of negative and positive margins.
  2. Incorporate current guidelines and recent data including margin status for local treatment options of breast cancer.
  3. Utilize optimal strategies to evaluate margin status of breast resection specimens.
