Conjunctival Pathology: Common Challenges for Practicing Pathologists

Educational Objective

The USCAP Companion meeting committee for the AAOOP discussed the reviews from the previous meeting, reviewed topics that were presented in prior years and speakers involved in the programs. Dr. Nora Laver was selected as the Program Chair and together with the committed concluded that the topic of challenging conjunctival lesions for practicing pathologists would attract a general surgical pathologic audience. The speakers were selected for their expertise and commitment to the field of ocular pathology. This program will provide the audience with a review of a variety of diseases involving the conjunctiva. The program will illustrate the clinical presentation, main histopathological features, differential diagnosis and most current terminology use in the diagnosis of conjunctival pathology. Practical clinico-pathological cases addressing issues that relate to general surgical pathology practice will be presented. The most common and challenging inflammatory, infectious and benign and malignant tumors involving the conjunctiva will be discussed. This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of practicing surgical pathologists, fellows and residents who are involved in the diagnosis of common conjunctival pathologies. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Review the normal histology of the conjunctiva and contrast it to the most common benign inflammatory and infections diseases.
  2. Highlight the clinical, histological findings and differential diagnoses of common conjunctival pathologies including epithelial neoplasias, melanocytic and lymphoid diseases.
  3. Discuss the terminology used in conjunctival pathology and its relevance in current patient care.
