March 8 2017, 8:00am to 12:00pm

Description

SC06-Diagnostic Dilemma in Neoplastic and Non-neoplastic Bone Pathology

Faculty: Scott E. Kilpatrick, MD, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, G. Petur Nielsen, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, and John Reith, MD, University of Florida, Shands Hospital, Gainesville, FL

Session Credits: 3 CME and 3 SAMs

The course will provide a case-based, interactive presentation focusing on specific and common diagnostic problems in orthopedic pathology. Audience participation is encouraged. Topics to be discussed include enchondroma vs. chondrosarcoma, osteoid osteoma/osteoblastoma vs. osteosarcoma, metastatic carcinoma and nonmesenchymal lesions involving bone, tenosynovial giant cell tumors, chordoma vs. intraosseous benign notochordal cell tumor and notochordal remnants, and various forms of arthritis, including criteria and diagnosis of infectious revision arthroplasty. When necessary, the role of fine needle aspiration and core needle biopsies will be explored. Emphasis predominantly will be on light microscopic features with clinical and radiological correlation; however, ancillary studies, such as immunohistochemistry and cytogenetic/molecular analysis, will be presented when applicable.
The course is designed for pathology residents and general surgical pathologists seeking a better understanding of the orthopedic neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology. Images of the unknown cases, including radiology when applicable, and other course material will be posted on the USCAP website prior to the presentation.

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Confidently approach the differential diagnosis of common problematic areas in orthopedic pathology
Discuss and recognize diagnostic pitfalls in bone pathology
Know when to effectively and judiciously use ancillary techniques for the diagnosis of orthopedic tumors
