SC22 Making Comments Count: How to Give Effective Feedback
Session Credits: 3 CME and 3 SAMs
Faculty: Richard A. Prayson, MD and J. Jordi Rowe, MD, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH
As pathologists we are asked to provide feedback to and to assess the performance of students, residents and fellows in training, employees and colleagues.
The workshop should be of interest to anyone who is asked to provide feedback- all pathologist, residents and fellows. Effective assessment provides the individual with the opportunity to improve performance and to motivate learning in this era of milestones and competency based evaluation. Using an interactive approach, this course will attempt to address some of the challenges of generating effective assessments. Participants will be immersed in the complex and sometimes intimidating milieu of providing effective feedback and accurate assessments by observing, practicing and writing. Because giving accurate, timely and useful feedback is challenging and a skill that benefits from practice, we will discuss theory followed by generous use of interactive exercises to provide participants an opportunity to try their hand at providing a variety of assessments.
The workshop will consistent primarily of a series of interactive exercises (using role play, small group, and large group discussion) designed to highlight important aspects of the process. Didactic material will be presented using a PowerPoint format in between the exercises.
