2017 Annual Meeting

SC23-Surgical and Molecular Pathology of Thyroid Neoplasia

March 8 2017, 1:30pm to 5:30pm

Description

SC23-Surgical and Molecular Pathology of Thyroid Neoplasia

Session Credits: 3 CME and 3 SAMs

Faculty: Thomas J. Giordano, MD, PhD, University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, MI and Bruce M. Wenig, MD, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL

Surgical pathology of thyroid tumors remains a challenging diagnostic area with subjective criteria and well-documented interobserver variability. Molecular testing of thyroid nodules is shining light on some of these challenges due to a strong phenotype-genotype correlation that exists in thyroid tumors. We are now at a point where pre-operative molecular testing is impacting the evaluation of nodules and surgical approach. The goal of this course is to present relevant information on the surgical pathology of thyroid neoplasia in conjunction with the latest information on the genetics, genomics and molecular testing of thyroid nodules and cancer.
Specific topics to be presented include:

  • Surgical pathology of thyroid tumors, with recent work on follicular-patterned tumors.
  • Molecular genetics and genomics of thyroid tumors, including recent results from The Cancer Genome Atlas project on papillary carcinoma.
  • Molecular testing of thyroid nodules using FNA materials, including gene expression and genotyping based approaches.

A case based approach will be used. A strong emphasis will be placed on practical information needed to practice current thyroid pathology.

Upon completion of this educational activity, attendees should:

  1. Learn a practical approach to the surgical pathology of thyroid tumors, with special emphasis on follicular-patterned tumors.
  2. Learn the about the common somatic genetic alterations in thyroid tumors, including recent results from The Cancer Genome Atlas project on papillary carcinoma.
  3. Learn about the various molecular tests focused on thyroid nodules current offered in the marketplace, including their strengths and weaknesses
